Subscriber Survey: Herd Size
Findings:
Subscribers to The Cattleman had an average of 191.2 head of
cows and bred heifers on hand as of January 1, 2007, for a
projected total of 2,799,550 head. As in previous surveys, about
a third of the subscribers have herds which average 100 head or
more.
In
addition, 9,874 subscribers projected an average of 157.0 head
of stockers and yearlings on hand as of January 1, 2007, for a
projected total of 936,191 head. This is down substantially from
2006, affected by the extended Texas drought.
As a
result, the total head of beef cow/bred heifer herds and
stocker/yearling herds is 3,735,741, compared to 4,930,860 in
the 2006 survey.
