Where is the best steakhouse in your area, and what makes it stand out?

Editor's note: The question of where to get a good steak got so much response last year that we decided to run it again.

Jack Myers
Commercial producer
Snyder, Okla.

The Old Plantation in Medicine Park, Okla. The steaks are out of this world--so thick and big that I have to share one with my wife. They also have the best buns that I've ever eaten. A man would be a fool not to eat there. It's a real rustic building with a lot of historical significance. It's run by an elderly couple, and I hope nothing happens to them, because it's a terrific place!

Commercial producer
Canadian, Texas

The best steakhouse I ever knew was Sally Brainard's kitchen.

Melvin Foster
Rancher
Sterling City, Texas

I frequent a place in Colorado City called The Feed Store BBQ. My 45-minute drive one way is insignificant to have a chance to eat there. The standard fare is mesquite-smoked brisket, ribs, ham, sausage, etc. But the real reward is driving up there on Saturday night for the ribeye steaks cooked by the owner, Rudy Fleming.

He feeds a 16-ounce ribeye with all of the trimmings better and cheaper than you can find anywhere in the state--and he is a member of TSCRA! What makes it stand out is the food quality, super service, and being surrounded by a real cowboy atmosphere.

Santa Gertrudis, Polled Hereford and commercial producer
Houston, Texas

There are 3 outstanding steakhouses in the Houston area, which I would rate as follows:

1) Lynn's
2) Kelly's Del Frisco
3) Taste of Texas

The common thread that all 3 of these fine restaurants share is consistency. I have never had a bad steak at any one of these 3 restaurants, and the quality of beef has always been excellent to outstanding. This consistency allows them to charge a higher price for their product, which is eagerly paid by the public.

Stocker/feeder operator
Happy, Texas

The best steakhouse in my area would have to be David's in Amarillo. I have never had a tough steak, and the service is fantastic. Those two factors, combined with reasonable prices and great atmosphere, make for a pleasurable dining experience.
